On April 18^th 2017, the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago hosted a panel discussion on Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism in commemoration of International Day for Monuments and Sites at the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce Building, Columbus Circle, Westmoorings.

At the event, Ms Rudylynn De Four Roberts, President of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Trinidad and Tobago emphasized the importance of our buildings as she stated that our architecture provides continuity with our past and reflects our culture. She expressed that Heritage Tourism encourages preservation of both buildings and communities.

Dr Rita Pemberton, Former Senior Lecturer at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine and Independent Researcher shared an initiative to preserve the heritage of the island of Tobago through the Heritage Trails Project. This project seeks to increase the visibility and the accessibility of the Historical Sites on the island. Dr Pemberton indicated that there are currently two major trails, the Scarborough trail and the Churches.

Other panellists at the event included: Ms Esther Vidale, Secretary of the Nature Seekers Turtle Trust Board of Directors who shared some of the strategies and projects that her organization is currently engaged in to protect the turtles in Matura. In addition, Ms Johanne Ryan, Conservation Officer at the Asa Wright Nature Centre discussed her organization’s continued effects to contribute to the eco-tourism of Trinidad and Tobago.

Additionally, in commemoration of the day, the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago hosted a Landmarks Exhibition, showcasing Heritage Sites of Trinidad and Tobago at the News Media Room, NALIS, Port of Spain from 12^th – 21^st April, 2017.
