Monitoring Visit Conducted at Carnegie Free Lending Library, San Fernando
February 2, 2026

The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago recently conducted a monitoring and advisory site visit to the Carnegie Free Lending Library in San Fernando, a nationally listed heritage property of major civic and architectural significance.

Founded in 1916 through a donation from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and completed in 1919, the library was designed by Public Works architect E.R. Gammon and features notable neo-classical detailing.

For generations, the library has served as an important civic landmark and gathering space in the heart of San Fernando.

The Trust’s visit formed part of its responsibility to monitor the condition of registered heritage properties and to provide technical guidance to stakeholders, including NALIS, on appropriate measures to address deterioration and ensure that any future works align with the building’s listing grade and conservation requirements.

The National Trust remains committed to lending its expertise toward the responsible preservation of Trinidad and Tobago’s built heritage.
