Traditional Carnival and the Midnight Robber Spotlighted in First Toute Bagai Lecture of 2026
February 2, 2026

The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago recently hosted the first installment of its 2026 Toute Bagai Lecture Series, titled Traditional Carnival: Midnight Robber Edition.

The session was hosted by Joseph Bertrand, Education and Outreach Officer at the Trust, and featured cultural performer, educator, and theatre professional Kurtis Gross ‘Chaos Bringer’.

In this engaging podcast-style conversation, Kurtis explored the Midnight Robber as one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most iconic traditional Carnival characters. He reflected on the tradition’s historical roots, spiritual rituals of preparation, and the psychological depth of the Robber’s role in expressing personal truth and social commentary through masquerade.

The lecture also considered the evolution of Carnival and the importance of safeguarding traditional mas practices within an increasingly commercialized landscape.

The full lecture is now available on the Trust’s YouTube channel:
