Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago — The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago celebrated Diwali in an extraordinary way this year with the Lights of Unity event, hosted at the historic Mille Fleurs Heritage House on October 26th and 27th. This celebration brought communities together through traditional festivities, cultural showcases, and an unprecedented display of artistry.

In a remarkable display of community participation, Lights of Unity received a record-breaking 207 deeya submissions from across the country. This included contributions from students representing 14 schools and others from individuals, as well as submissions through partnerships with regional corporations. The deeyas were arranged and displayed to create a stunning exhibition, symbolizing the spirit of Diwali.

The event, sponsored by dedicated partners such as Mystical Magical Moments (who transformed Mille Fleurs with their beautiful décor), Anand Brand, Chatak Quality Foods, First Citizens Bank, HADCO, and The Little Store, was a true testament to cultural celebration and collaboration.

Throughout the weekend, visitors immersed themselves in a variety of cultural experiences. Highlights included a tabla workshop led by Mayank Ramgoolie, captivating Indian dance workshops with expert guidance from Seema Suruj Jardine and Nattyam Yogam, and Indian clothing and jewelry sales from Vishva Creations TT. Visitors also enjoyed henna (mehendi) art, provided by talented local artists Aneesa Karim, Shania Sookdeo, Ariel Moti, and Karishma Lalla, who showcased their skills and added to the festive atmosphere.

As evening approached, the lights of the deeyas filled Mille Fleurs with a warm and inviting glow, symbolizing Diwali’s enduring message of good triumphing over evil and the power of unity.

“We are deeply moved by the community’s participation and enthusiasm for this event,” said Graeme Suite, the Business Development and Marketing Coordinator at the National Trust. “The record number of deeya submissions, as well as the invaluable contributions of our partners, reflect a shared commitment to preserving and celebrating our heritage and cultural diversity.”

The National Trust extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, participated, and contributed to the success of Lights of Unity, making this Diwali a truly unforgettable celebration.
