The Ortinola Estate was initially developed by a Spanish colonial land grant between 1780 and 1800. Early owners included Mr. C. Rigual who first owned the estate, followed by Cipriano Cipriani in 1834 and Tennants Estates Ltd. who leased it to the Cadbury Brothers of Birmingham, England in 1897.  The Plantation Great House was built in the 1890s and was occupied by Mr. J.P. Bain, Manager of the Cadbury Brothers’ estate. Ortinola was once a thriving cocoa estate that supplied cocoa beans to Cadbury Brothers. The current owners are Russel and Vindra Nath who acquired the estate and Great House in 1998. The Great House was restored between 2001 and 2003 and is used by the Cocoa Research Centre for workshops and various functions including weddings, tours around the estate etc. and has recently entered the business of chocolate production.
