Colombus Square
[ca-sidebar id=”12985″]

Columbus Square was the site of Port of Spain’s original Roman Catholic church. The square was formally opened in 1880 and was recorded by  Jose M Bodu in his “ Trinidadian- Historical account of Trinidad” as follows:

Christopher Columbus Square is certainly the neatest enclosure of the sort in town, was opened on the 18 September in the presence of His Excellency W.A.G Young, administrator of the government. The religious ceremony was conducted by His Grace the Archbishop Gonin.

This charming enclosure, which is planted in shrubs and laid out with neatly gravelled paths, contains an elegant fountain, the gift to the Borough by the late Mr Hippolite Bode, Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur, a wealthy proprietor and merchant whose place of business was in the immediate vicinity.

Situated behind the Roman Catholic Cathedral, this is one of the greatest embellishments of our town.
