Joseph Salvatori left Corsica in the late 1800s to travel to the Americas with no more than 35 francs to his name. He went on to build a vast business empire that included the largest department store in the Caribbean, and had a life of such consequence that Charles de Gaulle acknowledged him in his memoirs.
