Synagogue Historic District Lecture Strengthens Regional Heritage Collaboration
February 26, 2026

The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago recently hosted a collaborative edition of its Toute Bagai Lecture Series with the Barbados National Trust.

The lecture, presented by Geoffrey Ramsey, President of the Barbados National Trust, explored the 400-year history of the Synagogue Historic District in Bridgetown and its designation within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Historic Bridgetown.

Mr. Ramsey detailed the migration of Sephardic Jews to the Caribbean, the influence of the sugar industry, and the extensive restoration efforts that culminated in the district’s official reopening in 2017. The presentation highlighted the contributions of local and international artisans and the sustainable management of the site by a dedicated board.

The session concluded with discussion on future collaboration, including a planned visit by the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago to Barbados in June.
