The Good Shepherd Anglican Church was consecrated in 1886, on St. Andrew’s Day by the Lord Bishop of Trinidad and Tobago, the Right Rev. Richard Rawle. The building itself was initially composed of timber and was modelled after a cross. It is located on the corner of Freeling Street and Morton Street, Tunapuna and remains to be one of the oldest buildings in Tunapuna.  The wooden frame was replaced by a steel structure donated by the Orange Grove Sugar Estate. The church had an original organ installed in 1890 and is still functional at present. 

The original building possessed no wings, however a southern extension was added in the early 1900’s adjoining to the organ chamber and the northern wing was added in later years. A Lady Chapel was also added to the church during the 1930’s, where prayer before mass is conducted as well as smaller services. The church has been standing for over 130 years and remains to be an epicentre of festivity and congregation in the Tunapuna area. 

The Anglican Faith was introduced to Trinidad through the capture and colonization of the island in 1797 by the British. The first Anglican leader in Trinidad, was Reverend J.H. Clapham, the Chaplain to the armed forces who was formally initiated as Church of England Rector in Trinidad.
