Statement on Wild Fowl Trust larceny
June 11, 2021

The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago wishes to express its deep concern at the loss of locally endangered birds, the despicable theft of the incubator and the damage to a world-renowned natural heritage site. The Pointe-a-Pierre Wild Fowl Trust was Listed as a protected Property of Interest in 2019 by the National Trust and is an invaluable part of the natural heritage of the country. The Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust is a national, non-profit, independent, non-governmental organization, uniquely situated within an oil refinery and is the second oldest wild fowl trust in the world. The organization has worked arduously for over 55 years to maintain a centre for conservation, protection and breeding locally endangered birds, and to maintain the important wetland ecosystem. The landscape, scenic location and the beautiful and unique wildfowl combined make this site a national treasure. The flora and fauna form part of our nation’s story and have attracted thousands of visitors, adults and children, both local and foreign.

We note that this act of larceny was well-planned, taking place as it did at night during the curfew, and displays a major breech of security on the estate. We are calling for the immediate placement of the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment on the compound especially around the Wildfowl Trust and other important installations on the compound, which are at severe risk as well.

The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago also calls for anyone with knowledge of the perpetrators or buyers to do the right and patriotic thing and provide the information to the police, any conservationist organisation, and/or the media so that we can join forces to rid the nation of these menaces.

Sincerely,

Margaret McDowall

Chairman, National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago
