National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago Launches Pilot for Enhanced Heritage Keepers Programme in Central Trinidad

January 2026 — Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago

The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago is pleased to announce the initiation of a pilot phase for its newly improved Heritage Keepers Programme, an innovative heritage education initiative designed to deepen student engagement with Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural and historic legacy.

This week, representatives of the National Trust conducted a site visit along the Valley Line District in Central Trinidad to select three Catholic schools to participate in the first phase of the programme. The pilot has been supported and endorsed by the Catholic Education Board of Management (CEMB), marking a significant partnership between heritage and education sectors.

The Heritage Keepers Programme introduces structured, age-appropriate heritage learning at both primary and secondary levels. Through a combination of interactive classroom activities and community-based experiences, participating students will explore heritage themes connected to their local environments. A key component of the initiative is the creation of heritage journals—student-driven documentations of local stories, sites, and cultural practices that foster pride, stewardship, and a deeper understanding of national identity.

“Heritage is not just about old buildings or sites,” said the National Trust. “It is about values, identity, and the responsibility we share to preserve our past for future generations. The Heritage Keepers Programme equips young people with the tools to become thoughtful custodians of our shared legacy.”
While the pilot phase will begin in three Catholic schools in Central Trinidad, the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago looks forward to expanding Heritage Keepers to include all denominational and government schools across the country, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to inclusive heritage education.
