Old Mayaro Post Office
[ca-sidebar id=”12985″]

Built in the early 1920s, the Mayaro Post Office is a beautiful and elegant structure. Historically it represents the establishment of Pierreville, the essential Mayaro of today. The Post Office was one of the first buildings in that area known as Old Road and later called Post Office Hill. Old Road is part of Mayaro Trace that goes back to 1850. In 1889, a Police Station was established on the hill overlooking the trace. The Radix Settlement, three miles north of Mayaro, was considered a more suitable place for the distribution of mail, being more developed as a community and also the main point of call for the island steamer which not only collected produce, but carried passengers and mail. Until 1913, the Anglican Church was, for all practical purposes, also a Post Office. That year, it was decided that they could no longer continue that role, and an independent Post Office facility was opened. The Post mistress was Miss Atkins.

A robbery took place in 1916 and the need for the construction of the Mayaro Post Office became clear after the incident. Not the least of the concerns was that revenue was being received so far away from the nearest Police Station. A site was identified close to the station and plans prepared to build the Post Office. Mr Phillip Xavier, a master builder from Radix, was given the job to construct the building. It is not known whether Xavier actually designed the building, but the structure was of a simple, but attractive Victorian tropical Cottage design.
