Event Details

For the third year in a row, the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago hosted US/ICOMOS interns from the International Exchange Programme. This year the Trust welcomed Stephanie Brisita and Eric Stalheim to work on the Plaza San Carlos Heritage District in San Fernando.

The role of the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago is to list and protect the designated historic sites so that the area can be officially declared a Heritage District. Presently, the Woodford Square Heritage District, declared in 2014, is the first and only Cabinet- approved heritage district in Trinidad and Tobago. Designating, preserving and revitalising the historic properties in the King’s Wharf area can result in socio-economic benefits including international and local tourism, expansion of the business sector, development of leisure facilities, increased family oriented spaces and activities, preservation of historical assets and growth of the creative sector. This is also connected to the developmental themes of Vision 2030 (the National Development Strategy of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago).

The US /ICOMOS interns have been in Trinidad for two months and have spent their time assessing the historical value of the buildings in the District according to the National Trust Act. They have studied the history, significance and historic architectural features and created Dossiers for each site. They have also created a proposal for guidelines and standards for the heritage district.

On August 8th at 4:30pm at the San Fernando City Hall they will present their findings on the Plaza San Carlos Heritage District.

The sites include:

  1. San Fernando Railway Station
  2. Tennant’s Building/Rodriguez Building
  3. Old Thorpe’s Garage
  4. Happy Corner
  5. Fish Market
  6. General Stores
  7. Old Post Office
